    Clinical Nurse

    The Neuro Step-Down Unit at Barnes Jewish Hospital is a specialized care area designed to provide intermediate-level care to patients with neurological conditions who require close monitoring but are stable enough to transition from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This unit caters to patients recovering from strokes, brain injuries, neurosurgical procedures, seizures, and other complex neurological conditions. Nurses in the Neuro Step-Down Unit are trained in advanced neurological assessments, monitoring of neuro-specific symptoms, and the use of specialized equipment, such as intracranial pressure monitors and continuous EEG. With a focus on early rehabilitation and recovery, the nursing staff works closely with a multidisciplinary team, including neurologists, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, and speech therapists, to provide comprehensive care that supports patients in regaining function and transitioning to less intensive care settings.

Overview

Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The Neuroscience Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 21 bed unit dedicated to the care of patients in need of specialized nursing care at a critical point in their healthcare journey, where they are at high risk for clinical deterioration.  Progressive care, with lower nurse patient ratios, allows for frequent assessment, intervention, treatment and specialized monitoring. 

The unit cares for pre and postoperative neurosurgical, neuro-medicine and stroke patients with complex needs using a team approach with nurses, charge nurse and patient care techs.  Bedside, central monitoring, and remote telemetry are standard for all PCU patients. Many resources are available to nurses on this unit, including:  Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Mananger, Assistant Nurse Managers and a Nurse Educator.  Additionally this nursing team collaborates with and are supported by a wide array of the multidisciplinary providers, physicians and pharmacists.

A specialized orientation is provided to prepare nurses to care for the neuroscience patient as well as training specific to Progressive Care.  Ongoing education and professional development is supported and encouraged. 

Attention to nursing patients with the provision of excellent outcomes is what drives the work on this unit.

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
  • Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
  • Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.
  • Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care. Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
